Surf at Jæren, Norway: A freezing Saturday in January

It’s January at Jæren.

January at Jæren is usually as wet as all other months at Jæren, with heavy rain, stale wind and thick fog. Sometimes though, the temperature drops beyond zero and snow falls down on us from the powers above. Sometimes the snow even stays without leaving just as quick as it came.

This day was one of those days.

This day the sun decided to show up for a day long appearance, the ocean gave us glassy conditions and the velvet layer of snow conspired to give the whole thing an Arctic feel.

Having been out injured since the end of november with 90 year old man’s back-syndrome, I’ve been slowly getting back into shooting in the ocean for the last few weeks.

The previous attempts have for the most part consisted of me dipping close to shore with the 70/200mm, shooting whatever passed me by Call of duty-style at a leisurely pace.

This day however, I decided to get in a little bit closer, doing rounds with both the 8-15mm F/4.0 and the 50mm F/1.4. The light conditions were to die for, the waves nice and hospitable and the brain freezes gave you the feeling of being alive.

Camera settings

Previously I’ve had to figure out my settings before going inside, but just before christmas I decided to splash some earnings on a backplate with configuration possibilites.

This pretty much means I’m consistently switching up the settings inside the ocean. In general I never did over ISO400, and never did shutter slower than 1/1000 sec.

The rest was changing all through the day.
